A Monitrice is similar to a doula, but there are some added benefits. A Monitrice does clinical skills for you at home before going to the hospital. Most commonly, she is able to listen to fetal heart tones, check your dilation, and take your blood pressure.

Not everybody wants a homebirth, but most people would like to labor at home as long as possible.  With a Monitrice, you can stay at home longer while having peace of mind knowing you are with a skilled birth attendant and someone who will accompany you to the hospital to support you during your birth

 

As a Monitrice, Dawn draws upon her knowledge and experience to provide emotional support, physical comfort, suggestions for labor progress, fetal positioning and help with relaxation techniques.  In addition, while laboring at home, she is able to listen to your baby’s heart rate, take your blood pressure and check your cervix if desired. 

 

Once you decide to go to the hospital, all medical care procedures are performed by the hospital staff.  Dawn will remain with you throughout the birth as a Doula once you arrive at the hospital.

 

Dawn will continue to facilitate communication between you and the birthing staff to make sure that you have the information you need to make informed decisions as they arise in labor.  As your Monitrice, she works for you, and not your caregiver or hospital.

· One extended prenatal home visit to finalize your birth preferences, practice the relaxation techniques learned in class, listen to fetal tones, check your blood pressure etc. (if desired)

· Certified HypnoBirthing Practitioner will attend your birthing
